Savannah River Site’s D-Area Demonstrates Perils of Coal Ash Settling Ponds for Amphibians

Last month, i traveled to Aiken, South Carolina with the production crew to visit the DOE’s Savannah River Site.

There, researchers at the Savannah River Ecology Lab have unparalleled access to coal ash settling ponds in order to study and document the effects of this coal ash disposal method on amphibians, thanks to funding and access granted by the Department of Energy.

Visited Raleigh for a couple days… had a couple day events with the bus and local riverkeepers there. Here are some shots from a boat ride on the Neuse River in New Bern, North Carolina.

We stopped for two days in Savannah… wish we could have been there longer though! Couldn’t stop thinking of Gone with the Wind the entire time.

Not many shots from Mobile unfortunately… but we did get to spend some time with the Odyssey and her crew. They chase down sperm whales all over the world to biopsy their skin and conduct toxicology experiments on the whale’s cell lines. This summer they are focusing on whales in the gulf. We got to spend an evening with them… so here are a few shots from the boat, as well one from downtown Mobile.

Next we visited the gulf, where we investigated human impact on water… and how local fishermen and other businesses were affected by the oil spill. Here are a few shots from our time there.

Here are a few shots from Santa Fe. A bunch of weapons from a “Mountain Man Fair” we checked out, and a couple street musicians.
